Detailed Course Description

TOGAF™ 8.1

TOGAF™ 8.1 provides an Architecture Development Method and a Foundation Architecture that can be used as the basis for creating an organisation's enterprise architecture. It has been built up over several years through open participation and collaboration between leading industry practitioners. In addition, TOGAF™ 8.1 provides a variety of tools, building blocks and resources that facilitate the process and enable the design and development of enterprise architecture across four domains; Business, Data, Applications and Technology.

Introduction

This four-day course consists of detailed instruction on The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF™) Version 8.1. It includes the benefits of using TOGAF™ to create well-designed enterprise architectures and shows how TOGAF™ relates to other enterprise architectures and frameworks that are currently in use.

Upon completion of this course, the delegate will understand the TOGAF™ 8.1 framework and how to practically apply it to support the design and implementation of enterprise architecture.

Course Outline

  • The business rationale behind Enterprise Architecture and TOGAF™
  • An overview of TOGAF™ 8.1.1
    • Development of effective architecture principles
    • Architecture patterns, views and viewpoints
    • Architecture goals
    • TOGAF™ information sets
    • Requirements engineering using various business scenarios
  • Application of the TOGAF™ Architecture Development Method
    • Architecture building blocks and their relationships to the A.D.M
    • The enterprise continuum and its supporting architectures
  • TOGAF™ components
    • The Technical Reference Model
    • The Standards Information Base
  • Architecture governance processes
  • Architecture maturity assessments
  • Architecture skills framework
  • Tools, techniques and methods for architectural development

Course Description

The course will be presented using a combination of lectures and case-study discussions. The pace of the course is adapted to the delegates attending but should follow the structure described below.

On the morning of the first day, delegates are given a common understanding of the vocabulary to be used throughout the course. They are then provided an overview of who The Open Group is and how TOGAF™ has evolved over time.

The balance of day one, day two and the morning of day three are spent going through the Architecture Development Methods (ADM) ten phases. The course addresses all ten phases and their inter-relationships. This includes discussions on how to implement each phase as well as which inputs are required and what outputs are produced from each phase. While exploring the ten phases, the course touches on the enterprise continuum and resource base to highlight possible areas where one would typically reference this part of TOGAF™. Where relevant, practical architecture examples of work conducted in the field are used to illustrate the methodology behind the various phases.

The afternoon of day three is spent examining the Enterprise Continuum and Resource Base, highlighting issues that have not as yet been covered in the material.

At the end of each of the first three days, a short individual question is handed out and the delegates can either use the last half hour of the day to complete it or come in early the following morning. Feedback on these assessments is given by the instructor during the course.

Day four is used to turn the theory into practical understanding. More examples are presented and delegates work in groups to complete a TOGAF™ case study. The latter half of the afternoon is dedicated to individual assessments which delegates complete before leaving.

Course Outcome

Following the TOGAF™ 8.1 Certification Training Course, the delegates will have:

  • An understanding of the business rationale behind Enterprise Architecture and TOGAF™ 8.1
  • A very good overview of TOGAF™ 8.1, what it consists of and how to use it
  • Developed effective architecture principles
  • The ability to create architecture patterns, views and viewpoints
  • The ability to use business scenarios in requirements engineering
  • Applied the TOGAF™ Architecture Development Method and seen it applied in real world examples
  • Used some of the TOGAF™ components that support the ADM;

The enterprise continuum

  • The Technical Reference Model
  • The Standards Information Base

The resource base (which houses - amongst others):

  • Guidelines for establishing and operating an Enterprise Architecture Board
  • Guidelines for ensuring project compliance to architecture
  • Guidelines for defining and using architecture contracts
  • A framework and guidelines for Architecture Governance
  • Guidelines for using architectural patterns
  • Principles for the use and deployment of IT resources across the enterprise
  • A set of role, skill and experience norms for staff undertaking Enterprise Architecture work
  • Guidelines for viewpoints and views in architecture models
  • Building Blocks Example
  • Business Scenarios: A method for deriving business requirements for architecture and the implied technical requirements
  • Architecture governance processes

Course Instructor

With over fifteen years of architecture and business experience, Sarina Viljoen is familiar with many real world challenges. She led the enterprise architecture efforts for South Africa's telecommunications operator, Telkom, for several years. Sarina holds a Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) from the University of Johannesburg and is TOGAF 8.1.1 certified. She is a regular contributor to the development of TOGAF and has been instrumental in framing today's thinking of what enterprise architecture is.

Louw Labuschagne has over 14 years of information management consulting experience in a range of different areas such as Enterprise Architecture, Data Modelling, Relational & Star Schema Database Design and Enterprise Software Development.
